COAT TEXTURE:

HOW TO ACHIEVE THE OPTIMUM RESULTS . . .
AND WHY

Judging dogs is very subjective. There are many things to consider; however, some judges choose to use the "Rule of Five" to evaluate the breed characteristics (or lack thereof) in each exhibit.

The Rule of Five simply says: "The easiest way to judge a dog is to look at the sum of the parts, not the individual parts." There are only five properties that must be assessed using this approach. These five properties are listed below alphabetically, rather than by priority as this will vary from breed to breed depending on the particular breed's primary function.
COAT
HEAD
MOVEMENT
SHAPE
TEMPERAMENT

In this article we will be presenting breeds in categories according to coat texture relevant to their breed standard. In each of these categories we will be giving examples of breeds. Unfortunately we are unable to name every single breed with relevant coat texture for each Group; however, I am sure that you will be able to ascertain which category that your breed (or any breed not listed) will fit into.

Fundamentally, categories range from short / medium coated breeds, (with or without fringing), through to bouffant, coarse, harsh / hard , and silky / flowing.

Within these categories we also encounter single versus double coated, coarse to soft fluffy bouffant and coarse wiry to harsh textured.

Throughout the Laser Lites range we have products to suit all coat textures. We have products that simply maintain a correct coat texture to products that can enhance an incorrect coat texture to bring it to the optimum for the breed requirement. And we have products for maintenance ie non-show finish.

Further, because no two dogs have identical coats (not even within the same breed) we sell core products plus additives so that you can customise your own formulation that will be just right for your particular dog.

Let's commence by discussing the individual coat types.

GENERAL:

All Laser Lites shampoos and conditioners are designed to be diluted according to usage e.g. bathing in a tub (typically dilute 10:1), or bathing in a hydrobath (typically dilute 100:1).

All Laser Lites shampoos are manufactured to be low sudsing to prevent excessive suds during hydobathing. Due to the pH balance of all Laser Lites shampoos and conditioners you are able to use them in the concentrated form without fear of harm to an animal's skin or coat. And the correct pH reduces dandruff. Because the shampoos are low sudsing, and most of the conditioners are leave in, the amount of water required to bathe an animal is significantly reduced.

Please click below to go to specific discussion on the following coat types and for a more detailed look at Laser Lites and the whole range of products !!

Category 1 - Short to Medium Length Coat:

Typical Breeds: Beagle, Boxer, Chihuahua Smooth Coat, Corgi, Doberman, Fox Terrier Smooth, German Shepherd, Great Dane, Italian Greyhound, Labrador, German Shorthaired Pointer and Whippet.

The majority of breeds in this group call for a smooth texture where each hair can be easily defined by eye. They should feel slick to the touch with a natural lustre. This category makes up nearly 70% of all breeds.

Show Bath:
If the coat is in good condition then shampoo with any of the following; Stripping, Lanolin, Herbal or Duo 2 in 1 Shampoo. It is recommended that you use Stripping Shampoo at least every 6 - 8 weeks to ensure that the coat remains free of build up,.although you can use Stripping Shampoo every week. A coat displaying excess build up will look dull and fluffy. You should shampoo the coat twice, ensuring that you thoroughly rinse all shampoo from the coat.

It is recommended that you condition the coat with any of the following; Acid Rinse, Balsam or Lanolin mixed with 1 cap of Silk for extra shine and smoothness. Rinse coat leaving just a touch of conditioner.

If the coat is in excellent condition and you have used Duo 2 in 1 Shampoo you may not need further conditioning.

On show day we recommend either Liquid Diamonds or Show Spray. These can be applied using your favourite grooming mitt with preference given to pure sheepskin mitts.

Maintenance:
Many of the breeds in this category are not bathed every week. If bathing these breeds it is recommended that the show bath procedures be followed. When you are not completely bathing your dog you can use Dry Kleen which is a waterless shampoo. This type of shampoo is designed not to be rinsed off. Simply spray Dry Kleen onto the coat and place a warm damp towel over the animal. This will lift the dirt, grime and smell from the coat leaving a fresh scent. Follow this procedure once or twice until the coat has returned to the desired state. A Laser Lites aromatherapy oil deodorant is also suggested.

Category 2 - Fringed Breeds

Medium length body coat with feathering on legs, undercarriage and tail.

Typical Breeds: Australian Shepherd, Border Collie, Borzoi, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Cocker Spaniel, Dachshund Long, Japanese Chin, Papillion, Saluki

The majority of this category calls for a medium length straight body coat with long soft feathering. There should not be a discernible difference where the straight body coat mingles with the feathering.

Show Bath:
If the coat is in good condition then shampoo with either of the following; Lanolin or Herbal Shampoo. Once again it is recommended that you use Stripping Shampoo at least every 6 - 8 weeks to ensure that the coat remains free of build up. A coat displaying excess build up will look dull and appear in poor condition. Brushing of the feathering may become difficult with the brush or comb appearing to drag during grooming. You should shampoo coat twice ensuring that you thoroughly rinse all shampoo from the coat.

Depending on the condition of the coat you should condition using one of the following: Acid Rinse, Balsam or Lanolin Conditioner. Rinse out the conditioner to your preference then mix 1 capful of Silk in a 1 Litre squeeze bottle of warm water and work this through the coat. Do no rinse out. Dry as normal.

Many of the breeds in this category suffer from a curly top coat. If this is a problem in your breed consider using Go Straight on the areas where a straighter finish is required.

Another issue in this category is lack of volume of feathering. Volume Plus is an excellent conditioner which will not only give you instant results but these results will remain throughout the show day. Where extra volume is required after the initial bath day you can mix Volume Plus with warm water in a spray bottle. Spray coat lightly and re blow dry the coat.

On show day we recommend Show Spray.

When grooming dogs with feathering it is recommended that you never brush a dry coat as this can cause hair breakage. Laser Lites Show Spray is an excellent everyday grooming spray for all breeds.

Maintenance:
Maintenance bathing of these breeds should be similar to that of show bathing however use of Go Straight and Volume Plus would not be necessary when not attending a show. One of the main problems associated with feathered coats is the staining from urine. Dry Kleen used daily will cleanse urine and other stain producing substances from the coat. After spraying Dry Kleen onto the coat, leave and allow it to work for at least a minute, then simply wipe clean with a dry cloth and either blow dry or use potato flour or corn starch to dry the coat. If staining is already present see our 'Stain Removal' section. A Laser Lites aromatherapy oil deodorant is also suggested.

Category 3 - Terrier Type Coats

Typical Breeds: Australian, Airedale, Border, Cairn, Scottish and West Highland White Terriers, German Wire Haired Pointer, Scottish Deerhound, Irish Wolfhound and Schnauzer.

This category calls for a hard or harsh outer coat some with softer furnishings however the operative word in this category is harsh.

Show Bath:
If the coat is in optimum condition and needs no extra harshness then simply shampoo with either Stripping or Ti Tree and Citronella Shampoo. No conditioner is necessary on show day. If the coat is a little too soft then shampoo with Stripping Shampoo with No More Stains added to increase the harsh finish.

We recommend a Bay Rum mixture for a finishing spray on show day.

Maintenance:
Once again many breeds in this category are not bathed weekly. Consider that the Dry Kleen solution could be diluted and not used in the ready to use state for this category. A Laser Lites aromatherapy oil deodorant is also suggested.

Staining is also an issue with this category and once again I recommend daily use of Dry Kleen to prevent urine and other substances from causing stains to the coat. If staining is already present see our 'Stain Removal' section.

As many breeds within this category use a combination of products, including chalk powder, to enhance their furnishings on show days it is recommended that at least the furnishings are shampooed after the show. When bathing furnishings shampoo with either of the following; Lanolin or Herbal Shampoo.

As furnishings are usually required to be fairly profuse then conditioning during maintenance bathing is recommended. It is recommended that you condition the coat with any of the following; Acid Rinse, Balsam or Lanolin. Conditioning furnishings brings back the elasticity to the hair and prevents breakage thus producing more fullness to the coat.

Category 4 - Spitz Coat

Typical Breeds: Akita, Alaskan Malamute, Chow Chow, Elkhound, Finish Spitz, Pomeranian, Samoyed, Siberian Husky, Shiba Inu

The breeds within this category call for a dense undercoat with a longer outer coat. These coats are required to stand off the body naturally.

This is one of the most misunderstood categories of coats. Many exhibitors believe that if they fill the coat with powders and concoctions then it will present correctly. Many exhibitors also believe that some of these breeds should never be bathed. From a judges point of view nothing could be further from the truth. Having to examine a dirty coat full of powder etc is one of the most distasteful jobs ever.

Show Bath:
It is imperative that you get the correct crispness to the coat to produce the necessary stand off effect. If you are from the "I never bath my dog and only use powder etc" school then it is suggested that you try a diluted form of Stripping Shampoo. If the coat is particularly dirty or smelly then shampoo twice. Thoroughly rinse all shampoo from the coat thoroughly and dry with a not-too-hot dryer.

If the coat is lacking volume or not standing away from the body enough use Volume Plus either as a conditioner or mixed in a spray bottle and sprayed through the coat prior to blow drying.

There are three sprays that could be used on these breeds on show day - Liquid Diamonds, Show Spray or Bay Rum.

Simply spray through the coat and blow dry. This process will remove dirt as well as unwanted doggie odours. A Laser Lites aromatherapy oil deodorant is also suggested.

Category 5 - Long Soft or Silky Coats

Typical Breeds: Afghan Hound, American Cocker Spaniel, Australian Silky Terrier, Maltese, Shih Tzu, Lhasa Apso and Soft Coated Wheaten

Most of these breeds are required to have a flowing coat where each hair is discernible. In the case of the Lhasa Apso there are many that misinterpret this coat. This coat is required to be hard not harsh. Judges' interpretation of this coat is that it is soft to touch however each hair is quite thick therefore giving the hard texture.

Show Bath:
If the coat is in good condition then shampoo with either of the following; Lanolin, Herbal Shampoo. Once again it is recommended that you use Stripping Shampoo at least every 6 - 8 weeks to ensure that the coat remains free of build up. A coat displaying excess build up will look dull and appear in poor condition. Brushing of the coat may become difficult with the brush or comb appearing to drag during grooming. A coat displaying build up may also be prone to knotting. You should shampoo the coat twice ensuring that you rinse all shampoo thoroughly from the coat. If the coat is a little dry you might try using Duo 2 in 1 Shampoo as your second shampoo.

It is recommended that you condition the coat with any of the following; Lanolin, Drape Go Straight,or Intensive Protein Treatment mixed with 1-6 caps of Silk. Depending on the texture, conditioning product can be left in, or rinsed out to suit. for extra shine and smoothness

When working with a smaller dog with a dry coat a treatment is recommended. Shampoo coat as above. Apply Intensive Protein Treatment undiluted direct to the coat using your hands to apply to the hair shaft from the skin to the ends of the coat. Work through the coat in the direction of the coat growth. Never rub the coat as this causes matting. Once the treatment has been evenly distributed through the coat then place the dog in a large plastic bag (e.g. garbage bag) and wrap in about three towels. The normal body heat of the dog will activate the treatment and allow the collagen to enter and repair the hair shaft. It is a good idea to take a seat and watch your favourite show on television as this process takes at least 30 minutes. After your treatment time has elapsed you should rinse the treatment totally out of the coat using tepid water to close the hair shaft down. Mix 1 - 5 capfuls of the Intensive Protein Treatment with one cap of Silk in approximately three litres of warm water. Place the dog in a bathing tub with a plug so that when you pour the solution over the dog you are able to capture the liquid that falls from the coat. Once you have poured the solution over the dog you may need to add warm water to the remaining solution so that you can scoop this remaining liquid continually over the body, head and tail. When you are sure this solution has been thoroughly distributed through the hair then lightly rinse the coat and blow dry as you normally would. This process will not only soften and recondition a dry coat but will also renew the elasticity of the hair.

Maintenance:
The secret to maintaining a long coat is….. keep it soft between shows. Bath using Lanolin Shampoo, with or without No More Stains (depending on how stained the coat is), then condition using one of our conditioners or treatments. If you prefer to put your dog in oil, use Mattless Magic instead of a conditioner. Also, WOW is excellent to help de-tangle your dog's coat.

Category 6 - Poodles:

There are three varieties of Poodles but the standards are the same: only the height is varied for each variety. Coat type is the same for all varieties.

Poodle coat is required to be harsh and naturally stand away from the body.

Show Bath:
Due to the fact that this breed calls for a harsh textured coat that will naturally stand away from the body your choice of shampoo will be dependant on the quality of your coat. If your coat is of excellent texture then you could use Herbal Shampoo. A coat that needs only a little more harshness may find that Ti Tree and Citronella Shampoo would be most suitable. For those coats needing extra help to produce the desired harsh texture would be best to use Stripping Shampoo, perhaps with a little No More Stains added.. It is not advisable to condition the coat for a show day as this may cause the coat to drop.

As most exhibitors choose to re bath their dog after a show to remove sprays and additives a different regime should be adopted (see below under Maintenance).

Maintenance:
White and light coloured poodles are prone to staining from urine, dirt or grass. For effective stain removal make a mixture of shampoo with No More Stains. Make this mixture from 1 cup of shampoo mixed with a tablespoon of No More Stains then add hot water enough to produce a paste. Be mindful that adding hot water to this mixture will cause the mixture to froth up therefore use a container that appears larger than necessary. Apply the paste to the stained coat and leave for at least 15 minutes. Then shampoo coat with your shampoo of choice. As any whitening process will cause the natural oils in the coat to be removed it is recommended that you use an Intensive Protein Treatment or Volume Plus after this process.

One of the most common problems incurred by Poodle exhibitors is the matting of the coat in between shows thus adding many hours to the regular grooming schedule. The best way to alleviate this problem of matting is to soften the coat between shows.

Shampoo your dog with Stripping Shampoo to remove sprays and additives then shampoo using Lanolin Shampoo or Duo. Thoroughly rinse the coat of all shampoo. Condition using either Intensive Protein Treatment or Lanolin Conditioner mixed with one to two capfuls of Silk. Ensure that this mixture is evenly distributed throughout the coat either by applying in a Hydro Bath or applying in a bath tub where excess is able to be scooped back through the coat. Do not rinse out - dry as normal.

If you prefer to put your dogs 'down in oil' then follow the maintenance shampoo instructions and replace the conditioner with Mattless Magic. Also WOW is excellent to help de-tangle your dog's coat.

Background:

Laser Lites was originally conceived in 1992 by Dr. Paul Hewitt, who has a PhD in Chemistry / Physics, nearly 40 years experience in canine coat care through his involvement with the Afghan Hound, Saluki and Lhasa Apso under the world famous Khandhu prefix, and nearly 20 years grooming almost every breed known in his family boarding kennel and grooming salon.

This background has allowed Dr Hewitt to develop one of the most comprehensive ranges of premium hair care products being marketed in the world of show dogs.

Laser Lites started selling commercially in 1995 and is now among the top selling ranges on the Australian show dog scene, is in the top ten in Europe, and sells in nearly 50 countries worldwide.

Why is the Laser Lites range so different ?

Firstly, this is a range of products developed for animals, not just human products re-badged. As a consequence, most of our products are acid neutral to suit the skins of dogs, cats, horses, and indeed all animals. Correct pH reduces dandruff and flakey skin. We will talk in terms of dogs, but remember, Laser Lites is suitable for all animals, including the human kind.

Secondly, no two dogs' coats are the same, even within the same breed. So we sell core products, plus additives so that you can develop your own formula that will be just right for your particular dog.

Thirdly, we have a two-program approach - show and maintenance. While it is very important to show the dog with the correct texture, it is not necessary to be that way at home. Put simply, soft hair grows more rapidly than harsh hair, which tends to break off. Laser Lites has a range of products to help in maintenance, and another range to give you back the correct texture for your breed in the show ring.

Fourthly, our shampoos are low sudsing to rinse out easily, and most of our conditioners are leave in. So, much less water is used in the bathing process.

And finally, our standard dilution rate is 1:10. Coupled with our selling price, this makes Laser Lites arguably the best value-for-money range on the market.

So there you have it….. five very good reasons for choosing Laser Lites next time you purchase your animal hair care products.
